Brice Marden
Paintings on Marble
Text by Lisa Liebmann

Between 1981 and 1987 Marden made a series of 32 paintings on fragments of marble that he gathered on the Greek island Hydra, the location of several ancient marble quarries. These works are presented here for the first time, with an essay discussing their importance in the transition from the earlier monochromatic paintings to the more organic, calligraphic work that followed.
