This is the first monograph on the work of Scottish-born, New York–based artist Jacob Littlejohn (b. 1995). Informed by moments of the sublime in our experience of the natural world, as well as poetry and folklore, Littlejohn’s paintings represent the new guard of abstraction. His layered, expressionist works at turns evoke topography, cosmic matter, and otherworldly environments, while remaining rooted in the formal. This volume spans paintings made over the last three years, and features essays by Hilton Als and Bob Nickas. As Nickas writes, the artist “understands, as the Impressionists revealed, that nature reflecting itself, as in a river, offers images of abstraction. In his work, Littlejohn offers another, possibly more proximal reflection: reality in its substrate and details, examined on an atomic level.”
